Solar in New York

Powering a Clean Energy Future

EDF Renewables in New York

For over 35 years, we have worked with hundreds of communities across the country building long-standing relationships with local leaders and neighbors. We invest in our host communities and landowners and take great pride in their success. Our projects provide jobs, tax revenues, landowner payments, and other sources of local economic development. EDF Renewables is committed to our host communities for the life of the project.

Did you know? EDF Renewables has developed 25 renewable energy projects, representing 875 megawatts of capacity across New York state — that's enough energy to power the equivalent of 250,000+ homes!

Support for Upstate Communities

EDF Renewables recognizes all members of our communities. Here are some examples of benefits we have created to ensure each Project has a positive impact on its local community.

Our annual Share the Sun donation program gives funds to community groups and initiatives, chosen by a local selection committee

We award $2,000 annual scholarships to local school district(s) for a student interested in trades or renewable energy

We engage in early and ongoing coordination with training and employment centers, BOCES, community colleges, and union institutions to create educational opportunities and find ways to integrate the local workforce into the fast-growing solar industry

Why host a solar project?

Hosting a solar project brings many benefits to local communities, including:

  • Reliable long-term income for landowners, counties, host municipalities, and associated school districts for the life of the project
  • Fully compatible with agricultural land uses; solar projects can create the potential for farming opportunities on-site, such as grazing sheep, growing cover crops, or honey production
  • Improved local ecosystems, which in turn benefits surrounding farmland. Solar projects can help improve stormwater retention and flow, reduce the use of agricultural chemicals, and create habitat for pollinators.
  • Significant job creation during the 12-24-month construction phase; 1-4 full-time, permanent positions once the project is operational
  • Generates demand for local services (food, lodging, materials, construction services) during the 12-24-month construction phase
  • The ability to generate abundant electricity from a clean and 100% renewable source
