TORONTO, Ontario (April 14, 2016) : EDF Renewables Inc., a subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles, today announced the signature of two 20-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) for a total of 22 megawatts (MWac) of solar energy. Selected by the IESO under the Large Renewable Procurement I Request for Proposal (“LRP I RFP”), these two renewable energy projects represent a partnership between EDF Renewables and the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation.
The Barlow Solar Energy Centre is situated on privately-owned land located within the Township of South Stormont and interconnected through the City of Cornwall. The project will have a nameplate capacity of 10 MWac. The Pendleton Solar Energy Centre is situated on privately-owned land within the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet, and will have a nameplate capacity of 12 MWac. Together, the two projects are expected to create more than 150 jobs during construction.
Construction is planned for 2018, following the receipt of all required provincial and municipal approvals and permits. Commercial operation is expected by the end of 2018. EDF Renewables Inc. will continue to engage with local communities, Aboriginal communities and other key stakeholders throughout the development process.
“These two projects represent a significant opportunity to build renewable energy for the Province in the host communities in partnership with the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn,” commented Cory Basil, Vice President of Development for EDF Renewables. “EDF Renewables has a proven track record of working with municipalities and Aboriginal communities through our project development activities across Canada and we look forward to working with our partners and host communities as we expand our activities in Ontario. The EDF EN team has worked diligently to develop these opportunities and we are proud to help Ontario deliver its clean energy strategy.”
According to Chief Kirby Whiteduck of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, “As stewards of the land for the next seven generations, the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan are excited to form a partnership with EDF Renewables for the development and generation of renewable energy. This initiative will bring forth important economic benefits to the First Nation while continuing to foster the preservation of our environment and our further objective of partnering with our non-Algonquin neighbors.”
